This day was definitely hard. It was a real challenge just to bring everyone together in school with the short amount of time that was given to us. However, I surprised how many people actually signed up from Brent. It was good to see people take a stand and clean the beach. Planning wasn't as hard as actually doing the activity and keeping people persistent. The bus took a long time to get there in the morning and people from the lighthouse kept telling us to all sign in. I was worried because they were late and I kept having to tell the people at the lighthouse that everyone from Brent wasn't fully here yet.
I was one of the 6 leaders first to arrive. It was nice working with people who actually took the time and effort to clean the beach. I picked up a lot of garbage particularly plastic, foam, diapers, slippers, and even toys. It was difficult to get everything started because getting the word out to everyone to get working and to contribute. Once we finally started cleaning everyone was contributing for the first hour or so. After that everyone started to grow tired and lazy. I had to go over to them and asked them to please get back at it. I mean I can understand that they were tired because there was so much trash and it looked overwhelming. They still should have put out more effort. I can say a good 13 people actually got the work done and stayed until everyone was finished. The others had left much earlier once they had grown tired.
When we first visited the beach to scope out the area it didn't seem so dirty however once we walked farther along it was a hefty sum of trash. Everyone was starting to lose focus and I tried to get everyone focused while we were cleaning. There were a lot of plastic found on the beach and as we got farther off there was a huge area full of trash. I was shocked to see how much trash that was created in this far off desolation. I picked up as much trash as I could and something stabbed me in the foot when I took a step to pick up trash. It stung a lot and it was hard to walk. I picked up as much trash as I could and I helped Jana guard our trash people she told me there seemed to be a mix-match of trash being spread. Which isn't going to be an efficient way of weighing everything if some trash bags were weighed 2 times. The beach clean up didn't last as long as it was suppose to be because it seemed that everyone was in a rush to leave however I'm glad that we helped the environment and made the beach cleaner. I mean if people just picked up their trash and threw it in the right bin then Philippines would probably be an even cleaner country. In Philippines there should be big trash cans that have different bins for different trash. I mean in school we have different trash barrels for different objects and creating some for Olongapo and actually initiating something like that would help instead of it ending up on the beach or the street.
This is a picture of the following students who are joining as volunteers (including myself) for the orphanage. I see good things from these people. They seem to be hardworking and creative people. It will be good working with them during this project our first official meeting will be held Thursday after school around 3pm on the September 23rd, 2010. Some people have already gone to me telling me about not making the meeting because they are in environmental club and I understand that. I will talk to them separately later on to fill them in. I was hoping for more people to join, but maybe later on there will be more people. :)
Today was most definitely a challenging day. I was playing badminton with Mr.Higgins and he was pretty good to me. He also taught me some new strategies in badminton which were really helpful. I learned where I should stand when someone is serving the birdie. I also learned that I have really bad footwork. hahahaha. I knew that in the past, but I thought I had improved a bit...I guess not. I need to get better at footwork and strategics while playing. It seems hard to think while playing because everything goes by quickly I can't even focus on where someone is while their playing. I want to be able to improve that, ABSOLUTELY NEED TO get better at footwork. I swear if I had better footwork I'd get the birdie most of the time. It was definitely a good day for badminton to learn some new things. :)
It took a while getting there since I had no specific address to the orphanage. We asked people if they knew where the POCCH organization was and a lot of people did not know. It kind of made me feel sad because these people who were from Calapandayan did not even know of the Orphanage. I first went to the boy's house and the older boys did not seem to want me there. However, the little boys liked me being there because they seemed pretty interested. There were 33 boys and 31 girls. After wards, I went to the girl's house and it seemed in better shape than the boys house. My favorite part of the whole visit to the girls house was being with the little toddler/babies. They were adorable and very pleased to see me. There was one girl who wanted me to hold her and I held her for a long time while talking to the others. She seemed to really like me and I really liked her as well for her sweet attitude. However, I had to move on and see the other girls in the building so I had to put her down. She cried A LOT when I did, I told her I would be back. We went to another room with these children that were disabled. I felt really bad because they seemed to be kind of sad just laying there and there was one boy who was very active and alive but he was deaf and couldn't speak. They told me he was very smart and trying to learn sign language. I would like to help him achieve that since there are many books available to teach people sign language. After that I went upstairs and spoke to the rest of the girls upstairs their ages ranged from 5 to 18 the younger ones ONCE AGAIN seem to like me more. I expected because once you get older you become more conscience of things. I didn't blame them at all for that. I tried to get to know them as much as I could before I left. They all remembered my name and yelled out multiple times BYE BYE ATE KAYE. Even my own cousin Mary they remembered her name as well. It made me laugh. hahahaha.
I was talking to one of the lady's who worked there and I believe her name was Ate Tess? I asked her what are the needs that the orphanage needed.
She told me that they needed:
1. School Supplies
2. Shoes/Slippers
3. Clothes
4. Books for their STARTING library (English or Tagalog)
I plan to have the first day we actually go to the orphanage on Oct. 16, 2010. It will be the introduction day of all of my other volunteers and the other children. I want them to get use to one another and to at least remember some of the children's name it could be an "ice breaker". One of my main goals are to help that one deaf child to learn sign language the lady said he was really smart and it would be a shame to waste it if he could not communicate with others. Obviously I need some more thinking and brainstorming for ideas about a fundraiser for them. However, I need to speak with all of the other volunteers for their ideas and suggestions. I had a good day. This will definitely spark some ideas for them.
I really wanted to take up an organizing role with this activity because
most of the time whenever I go to the beach I see a ton of garbage in
the water or in the sand. It gets me angry whenever I see that and I
pick it up and through it away. I mean it's not only my beach or someone
else's beach it's everybody's beach. We should do our best to try and
keep it clean. Philippines is such a beautiful country, however, the
excessive trash everywhere especially in the beaches destroy how
Philippines was. I want to do my best and try to get as many people
involved in this project to help. I will be working with hopefully many
other students from Brent Subic.
This is definitely a new challenge to help out of this international event. I've never really helped in cleaning a beach of for the sake of helping our planet. I will be working with other people from the Brent Subic community and also with other people here in the Philippines. I want to strive to work my hardest to promote or do whatever I can for the beach here. I know being eco-friendly is now a globally important issue and I would like to do my part in fulfilling my commitment to the environment. I want to be able to push myself to help out the community and the world. I want to clean as much as I can to make this beach sparkle with cleanliness :D
Everyone will benefit from this. There are plenty of people who swim in that
water or walk on that beach. I even walk along that beach and I have
seen a lot of trash. If the beaches or the environment in general of
Philippines was cleaner there would be less pollution around. The less
pollution will help everyone because there won't be so much trash around
and breathing the gust of polluted air.

I just had a meeting with Mr. T and it seems like a lot of work for me later on and I think it be good for me. I mean I need some experience with handling people and setting things up. After all I do want to move towards the Business field in the world which will have to do a lot with. Reflections, feed back, handling issues, handling people, and organizing a lot of events. This will benefit me a lot. I just talked to Mrs. Parcia at the POCCH and she seems to be pretty welcoming. The hard part is to try to look professional and know what I'm doing and want...Ekk..I'm kind of nervous, however, I got to step up my game! YEAH! I just have to think of some questions to ask her.
1. I do plan on asking what conditions and different backgrounds these children are coming from other than they were abandoned.
2. What are some particular needs that we could possibly accommodate that we could be of some service?
3. The age groups of children.
4. The amount of children I believe we all (me and volunteers) could handle.
5. Possibly any suggestions of her own that would be helpful.
Even though I do ask her some questions I am obviously going to have plans for these children. For the first time we obviously see these children I want to have us create an ''ice breaker'' make them feel comfortable with us. The first day we could possibly be an introduction day and create a BIG BROTHER and BIG SISTER bond. Maybe everyone who will volunteer could have a certain child assigned to them, that they could particularly grow close to. I mean they can be close to everyone by all means, however the idea seems nice. In states with that program I have seen many people grow happier because they finally have someone to lean on. Not only will this day have an introduction, I will have the children play certain sports with everyone. Near the afternoon before we leave we could possibly read to these kids and help them also read and have them take a nap. That should be a good ice breaker for the first day and then have more of a better of idea to plan the next visit.
I'm excited to start. It's something new to me and it will benefit everyone :)
If you would like to join the idea on the orphanage please pass the word on and look on my proposal for an idea of what we might be doing. My name is Kay. and if you are interested contact me at knee@brentsubic.edu.ph
i really hope to have people ask soon because the more the better. Oh and please be motivated if you really are sign up. Thank you.
I really wanted to start this project after talking to Mitchell Porter
about some ideas for CAS since I wasn't sure what to do. After some
thinking I really liked the idea with working with children since I take
care of my multiple cousins all the time. It would be good to work with
kids because they are young and just confused. Back when I first came
here my cousins were the same now they seem to be more focused a little
bit happier. I wish to accomplish that, I want to make those children in
a particular orphanage happy. They don't have family and I try to put
myself in their shoes and I understand their life isn't easy. So at
least what I can do and other IB candidates is try to give back to those
children and help them out since there isn't very many out there to
give them support. I want to be able to spend some time with these
children play a game with them. Make them happy and maybe some original
street games would be nice and definitely new for some people to try
out. I mean I have played some of those games with my cousins to see how
it felt and it was actually enjoyable. After spending some time and
getting to know some of the children we could possibly raise a fund to
buy them books or gifts by Christmas. Maybe have someone to dress up as
Santa to brighten up their day. I'm up for any other suggestions but
other than that that seems like a plan.
I want to help those who aren't as fortunate as me or anybody else. I
have never worked with an orphanage so it would be a new challenge to
me. I plan to work with many people and I really want to get other
people involved. I need to start taking responsibility and it would be
great to start planning things for these children. I have many ideas and
suggestions my cousins have helped out. I can be a slacker so I want to
stop that habit and really press myself. I know I am not the best in
planning but i want to try it out and develop new skills. Just making it
worth it for these children before Christmas would be spectacular and
it would really make those people's day.
Children of the Orphanage and possibly other students. I want these children to
have a new experience and to create them a comfort zone where they can
be relaxed and to feel good having us around. I don't want them scared
but even if they are i want them to eventually not be. I want to show
them that they are not alone in the world and there are people who
actually do care for other people. Other possible IB candidates will
benefit by actually having like a BIG BROTHER or BIG SISTER seeming
experience. I want them to feel good for what they've accomplished not
just doing this for the CAS, but truly for these kids.
Where: I'm not sure yet?
How Often: Every other Saturday? so twice a month :)
How long: 4 hours max.

I definitely like basketball I can see that I am not as good and I enjoy the drills we do I can see that I have many weaknesses so far. However, I want to do my best to improve my weaknesses. The whole passing and teamwork on the girl's basketball team isn't exactly great, but at least everyone participates. I want to get myself to do my best and strive to be better because I will try out for the Girl's Basketball Team this year and this club is a good practice to get my body and mind ready for when Basketball Season comes along. I hope to keep myself focused as much as possible.
Okay well I have finally got myself to write an entry after a while. What Mr. T said was definitely a wake up call for me. Well then I'm not too sure if I should separate each entry for each club so I will anyways just to be sure. Anyways, we have smash club every Monday and it's particularly hard to adjust back to school and being focused. Especially that we are getting back from the weekend the drills we have to do are hard to come back to because I haven't done Badminton drills since last school year. However, I want to improve my skills in this sport because when I've seen other players play this sport their really good. Then I look at my skills and I think aw..I want to be like that, that would be great. So I do my best to push myself when we do drills so I can become better. I plan to at least learn some new badminton skills such as smashing, perfecting footwork, and better drop shots. I also want to enable myself to get along with more people. Other than that, Smash Club has been typical. We run around, stretch, then do long shots.
